Inquisitive and Wondering in North Carolina

Checking in for a few minutes tonight...there is an Internet connection in the main building...so I will be able to check in every few days...have a great class...I will post some pictures soon... I miss you all so ever much...

Emerald is inquisitive and wondering. She is inclined to investigate and always wants to learn more. She really can get the scoop on just about anything. We call on her when we need to know how something works or why something does this.

Rebecca bought a hammer dulcimer in 2001. It is a beautiful handmade instrument. It is made of three different woods with inlays and fretwork. It sits on a stand in the music room. Occasionally we will pick up the hammers and let them dance across the strings. I will drag my fingers gently over the strings just the hear the harplike sound. But we don't know how to play it.

I bought it from Annie Lough at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. She is a noted musician who teaches there several times a year. I am teaching there this week and have taught on the same week with her many times. I have set the intention of taking a class with her to learn this musical instrument that I love.

Next week, Annie is teaching beginning hammered dulcimer! YIPPEE!!! I am going to stay for the class.

Today's aMUSEment - Is there something in your life that you have been meaning to learn but keep putting off? Why do we do that? So today take an action step, right now while you are thinking about it, toward your goal. Pick up the phone and register for a class. Google your intention and get the info you need.

Keep Cre8tin'

I am off to North Carolina early this morning...I leave you with a photo of dusk at the marina on Amelia Island...it should serve as inspiration to you until I can post again....

Keep Cre8tin' My Friends

Happy Birthday Leigh

Happy Birthday Leigh Leigh

My beautiful niece Leigh Anne is a birthday girl today and it is her first day of college...she is the one who wants to be Tinkerbell...a beautiful dancer...I remember when I first saw her when she was 4 months old...her daddy put her in my arms and said, "this is leigh leigh"...I was smitten, completely captivated by this tiny blessing...as beautiful on the inside as the outside...

Above we are playing a joke on her...when she travels people often mistake her for Ashley Judd...so we met her at the airport in Myrtle Beach with a sign saying "Ashley Judd"...like chauffeurs do...we created quite a stir...a real chauffeur offered to take her if she didn't want to go with those crazy people (my sister and me)...

Anti-Perfection Virus Protection

Duette is always Of Two Minds. She can see both sides of the story. She is the most fickle of muses because she can be swayed to another side with a good argument. You would not want her on a jury or maybe you would. She is also fair to a fault. This makes her a strong devil's advocate but a terrible decision maker. If she ever does make a decision she can second guess herself again and again.

As I ready myself for my classes, I try to have every detail worked out. I have been teaching for many years now, most of the kinks have been worked out. I have lists - supply lists, technique lists, color lists, flow of class lists...and each is checked several times before I leave. This is a well-oiled machine. So why do I second-guess myself?

Do you have trouble making up your mind about your art? Does it affect your creativity? Do you spend hours dwelling on the piece, trying to make it perfect? Perfection thwarts creativity and success. Do you have the perfection virus?

Today's aMUSEment - We are going to work on an anti-perfection virus protection. Do you know that some people are so afraid of not being perfect they actually never start doing something they love? The postpone that one thing that could fill their life with creativity and joy. I am going to tell you my best secret - you don't have to have a beginning to start. Some people wait until they have the perfect beginning before they start. This is stinkin' thinkin' and it prevents you from having a lot of fun. Set the timer for 6 minutes. Get your journal or paper and pen and start to write about the happiest day in your life. How old were you? What were you doing? How did you feel? Who were you with? Where were you? Just put the pen to paper and write as fast as you can. Don't edit as you go even if it seems silly. Don't lift the pen from the paper. Just keep writing until the timer rings. Then read over your musings. Somewhere in there is the beginning line. This can be applied to art - just make a mark on the surface. Music - just write the tune you are hearing or the words you want to Say. Dance - just start to move or sway. Poetry - write a line you want to use. Just start and the beginning will come.
You don't have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.

I Forgot to Remember

Well, I have really lost it I guess...I forgot to remember to post yesterday...plain out went on my happy way with no regard to my oughts and must-do's...GEESH....

I have a gazillion excuses...one being I woke up at 4AM and couldn't go back to sleep...so I reviewed my teaching syllabus' for my faux finishing and stenciling classes at John C. Campbell Folk School in beautiful Brasstown, North Carolina mountains. I worked for about an hour and went back to sleep until about 8AM. I was so focused on my class prep...that I hit the floor running. I had to go into Jacksonville to find some velvet for the stenciling class...

Now I know you are saying..."could it be that Rebecca actually teaches velvet Elvis painting???" That is exactly what my students always think...so I hear all kinds of excuses about not bringing the velvet because "I really don't want to paint on velvet..." then they see this...and change their minds...

Velvet wallhanging stenciled with metallic acrylic paints

So I always have to bring extra velvet...and this year I found this stencil...joker that I am, instead of putting the above on display this year...I am going to hang this...

Velvet wallhanging stenciled with acrylic paints

Being the editor of The Artistic Stenciler magazine...I feel I should offer you some examples of what stenciling is in 2007...Below is an example of today's stenciling...the ceiling, window treatments, and painting are all stenciled... even the windows to the right are stenciled...click to see more detail..

The dining room from The House That Faux Built in Baltimore, MD

For those of you who think stenciling is ducks and hearts or don't know about the ancient art of stenciling...actually the oldest artform known to mankind...cave painters used a form of stenciling, blowing chewed pigment through a reed to outline their hands...these hand stencils have been found The Cosquer Cave (Marseille, France), Gargas (Hautes-Pyrénées) and El Castillo in Spain.
Photo by J. Clottes of The Cosquer Cave (Marseille, France)

Here are some examples of extraordinary stenciling...

Painter Girl Carol Leonisio has some wonderful decorative painting

StencilSearch.com is the one-stop resource for stenciling

Today's aMUSEment - look at the above websites and blogs to see what stenciling is in 2001...

Walk on Water

This Muse leads me to follow my Whimsey to unexpected places. She is fanciful and capricious, always ready to journey to new frontiers during our play days. I call them play days because she encourages me to get in the studio and play.

And I get to play today!!! For the first time in months, I get to do what I want to do!!! I have a long To-Do list, but I am going to get ready for my class in North Carolina next week and I am going to get into the studio and paint...

I am following my whimsey from this point on...and when you need a laugh...visit Scarlett...

I admit that I borrowed (with permission) this post from Scarlett here - From the Shores of Introspect and Retrospect...I have laughed until I am drunk with joy over this. Thank you Miss Scarlett for letting me pass it on...

The Three Men Who Walked On Water

Who were the 3 men who walked on water?

The first was Jesus...

The second was Peter...

And the third was a guy named Jose...

Today's aMUSEment - Today is Play Day! Go into your studio and play with one new material, or tool, or idea. I know that you have something in there that you have been putting off using or saving for 'someday.' Drag it out. Go for it. See what you can create.

From One Tiny Link...

I want to share with you some more of my beautiful island home. In the local cemetery stands this magnificent angel...at attention guarding all who enter...or pass by...I pass her on the way to and from church...and I always feel some connection...

The sermon at church this morning was about faith...Abraham and Sarah's faith. They stepped out, with no idea where they were going...all they had was faith.

Don't we step out each day with our blogs? With faith that we will make some connection...I am but a tiny link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons I have never met...and may never meet, except through my computer screen....

In a short amount of time I have formed an ever-widening chain of acquaintances...who are becoming friends I care about...whom I look forward to communicating with each day...whom I miss when I am busy with my life...whom I pray for...and cry with...and celebrate with...

I put my thoughts out each day and trust that they will reach the right ears and touch the right heart...and make a difference...somehow...

This is the same faith connection I have with my students...I have them for such a short time...and in that time I must believe that I can plant seeds that I most probably will never see harvested...but I have faith that there will be a harvest nonetheless...

God created me to do some definite service for Him...He has committed some job to me which he has not committed to another soul before me or to come...I have a mission and I may never know it in this life...and it just may be the connection...this tiny link I form with you...

Today's aMUSEment - think about the links you form with others you touch throughout your life...make a point of smiling or acknowledging people whose lives you touch this week. Make a connection. Then bring that connection into your heart and you art this week...

I Mean Business

Patricia is the I Mean Business Muse. She is serious about everything in her life and often your life also. She doesn't put up with much nonsense and does not suffer fools lightly. You want her near when things are out of control because she will always be in control.

I need control today...everything is wacky. The magazine is a week late...I need to pay bills and I can't find them...I need to get ready for my class in North Carolina next week and my supplies are in boxes in the garage...I just found a check for an order of my books from April that has not been deposited...I have a book to write before the middle of September...I have corporate income taxes to get done...I have to call all my students for my classes in NC...I have to do samples for my class in PA...I need to make some art to get in the gallery...the house is a wreck...my car is leaking oil...it's 101 degrees...I need to get settled...NOW!!!!

Today's aMUSEment- Get down to business. Do you want to make a business of your art? Do you want your creativity to manifest an income or more income? Take a sheet of paper and number it 1-25. Set a timer for 10 minutes. Take three deep breaths and set an intention to create ideas. Brainstorm 25 ways you can make money with your artwork. Write everything that comes to mind. Don't edit as you go - just write. Even the things that seem wild and crazy or total nonsense. The first few should come easily, the next few with more thought, and the last few will be very difficult. Now put the paper aside and go create something we will return to the list another day.

Nothing Ever Stays the Same

The Myrtle Beach Pavilion was the place to go for a child of the 50s and 60s...I had my first roller coaster ride on the Hurricane...I rode the Carousel by seriously scouting the right animal to sit upon...I danced for hours in the Attic to music by the Catalinas, The Tams, The Embers, The Drifters, The Platters...It was second only to the ocean in excitement...

The Pavilion was torn down this year in the name of progress...in the name of greed...it seems the ocean front, mid city property is too valuable to remain an entertainment area...it is destined to become high-rise cement boxes...and it's owners destined to earn more millions to add to their existing millions...

This is the Pavilion of the 1960s...when my memories are so vivid...Here are some videos to remember the Myrtle Beach Pavilion...you don't need to watch them all...the first one and the last one tell the story the best...I just needed to have that reminder for my sisters and my children...

memories...

more memories...

and so it goes...

click photo to see farewell season billboard...

Today's aMUSEment - was there an amusement park you loved as a child...get out your paints and try to capture the essence of the place...use the colors that come to mind...aim for abstract here...a representation of your emotions...

Memories

Muse Mita is more of a sprite than anything, very pixyish. Her eyes express so much. She has memories...

She is not stuck in the past, but she does love to curl up with faded photographs and old love letters on occasion. Today is such an occasion...

She recalls her youthful days at the beach with her family...running into the waves with wild abandon...fearless...free...alive with delight...

She remembers her little pink bikini...with a sunflower on the top...playing for hours by the seashore...Coppertone...eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with sandy hands...walking down the beach to Krispy Kream for a warm donut...the Cadillac Court hotel...ocean front rooms...two swimming pools...

She remembers swimming in the hotel pool for
hours...her dad playing with his newest boat-like float...her mother's pink tulle hat that she always wore into the ocean...how her mother always got sunburned, sun poisoning, and sick - in that order...playing beach bingo...cotton candy...going Pavilion at night and watch the gigantic monkey organ band (German Baden Band Organ)...

She remembers sifting for sea shells and shark's teeth by the edge of the sea...building sand castles to the sky...digging and digging with her shovel...making molds with buckets and paper cups...gathering shells to decorate the top of the sand castle...making the moat around the castle...filling it with water...you see all the beach toys were very necessary for construction...

She remembers driving to Little River, North Carolina for seafood...her mother would never eat it...her father loved it...taking her first bite of shrimp...not liking scallops or okra...

She remembers her mother's annual trip to Joan Crosby's...breakfast at the Little Blue Inn next door...ice cold cokes in tiny bottles...chocolate Moon Pies...ice cream cones...salt water taffy...

She remembers...

Today's aMUSEment - what do you remember from your childhood vacations...sit with pencil and paper and write, stream of consciousness memories, no order or reason, just the bits and pieces that made the time yours...

Connection...Communication

The Twins come to play when Cre8Tiva feels of two minds. This duality is good at times when we are blessed with many thoughts and not so good in the times we feel fractured. They are always up for a brainstorming session.

I am of two minds today because I have to finish the magazine and I want to be doing something else somewhere else...

I am missing my family in Myrtle Beach. I had so little time with them. I needed much more. I begin to wonder just how quickly time goes by...very fleeting...very sneaky. It just vanishes...and years have floated by...people have grown up...or grown old...or grown away....and you a left to wonder how...

This is my favorite restaurant in beautiful Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina. Russell's is the last restaurant on the right as you drive from the north on Business 17. From the south it is the first on the right... It is a quaint local's kind of place...with about a dozen tables and a bar area. You can also eat on the large deck and in fall/winter Russell does frequent oyster roasts in the yard...I love, love, love the hush puppies with honey butter...but beware, if you start eating them, it's hard to stop...and you may not want your dinner...

This is the marsh view looking toward Garden City...that is the south end of the Grand Strand you can see in the distance...This is where the fishing and shrimp boats dock... you used to be able to come here and buy shrimp and fish straight from the boats when they docked...I am not sure you can do that anymore...again times moves on...not always to better times....

I vow to keep in closer contact with those I love...I am a bad communicator...I tend to be very solitary...I let amazing amounts of time get away from me...while those I love wait for the connection...my new passion for mail art may fix
that...
Yesterday, I received my first ever swap piece...mail art from the skirted eb at be...dream...play......oh how fun to open the mailbox and find something like this...it brightened my day....it was bulging with delights for the eye...and my new favorite tea "Passion"... thank you eb....i am a happy girl

now I must get busy with my swap mail art...communication...connection...rebecca!!!

Connection...Communication for ABC Wednesday hosted by Ms. Nesbit here...join in...

This is what was in it...
the angel cards made from drawings of some of eb's students...they made me cry with their gentle beauty...these were painted by children ages 5-12...they are my happy patsy prize for a guessing game on her blog...but they are really a happy becca prize!!! sequins and ribbons...and hearts and stars...a wonderful thing....a good thing...a fun thing...a joyful thing...

Today's aMUSEment - click here and join in the fun...make some mail art and send it to your blog sisters...your family...or me....

Make Some Art

Here is a small tutorial for artsymama's contest...

This is a faux finish background technique from my Golden Book workshop...It is called "Metallic Glass Beads" copyright Rebecca E. Parsons 2006 Make sure you click on the photos for a close-up view...

Step 1 - spread some Golden's Glass Bead Gel on surface with a 3" brush. This leaves brush marks. Stipple with tips of brush in random places. Let dry completely.

Step 2 - Sponge some Golden's Iridescent Copper metallic acrylic in upper left corner. Let dry. Dip tips of 1" brush in water and then in a puddle of Golden's Nickle Azo Gold to create a wash. Brush over surface. If it gets too dark add a little more water to brush and spread over surface. It will settle in depressions. Gently wipe some areas back with a good paper towel (one that will not shed). Let dry.

Step 3 - Stamp a face on the surface with permanent ink. Wad up some tissue paper and apply to surface with Golden's Gel Medium. When dry apply a wash of Golden's Ultramarine Blue over tissue.

Step 4 - Write your sentiment on a dried banana leaf and attach with Golden's Heavy Gel Medium. Dilute some Golden's UMB and apply along the edge of the tissue. Extend this out into the Golden's NAG areas, blending as you go.

Enjoy faux finishes for backgrounds to all your art...

Myrtle Beach Daze

Sorry I didn't post yesterday...I spent my precious last few minutes with my family before I had to head back to Florida...but I have two posts in one here...and to my family, still in MB...I miss you terribly...

I returned for a while to the place of childhood vacations...memories abound...loved ones gone are missed...my sisters and I take a walk on the beach...As a family, we are beach people...we have always loved the beach and the ocean...we love to walk on the sand in the early morning and late evening...some of us like to bake in the midday sun...

Sunday after I posted the sunrise and the ocean view, my sisters Pat (middle) and Meredith (right), and I went for a walk...as you can see from the photo...we have no sense of humor...I had asked them to look like they were walking...and this is the pose I got...I dubbed it the 3 Tops and a Couple of Bottoms...

There were some 17 of us by midday...and everyone was going to the beach...no questions asked...so we packed coolers...swathed ourselves in potions...gathered towels, chairs, beachmats...and off we took...

this is what the beach looked like...a veritable ocean of people...bodies and booties and umbrellas and towels...as far as the eye can see...

As you know I am in the studio by myself most of the time...what you don't know is that I do not do crowds...ever...I don't Christmas shop in December...I don't go to movies...I don't go to crowded anything...but I was going to give it a try and stay with my family for an hour...I was okay until I walked out into the ocean to get my feet cool...the sand was 185 degrees at least...when I turned around to take a photo of this scene, I had a full-blown panic attack of some sort...I said "I'm outta here..."...and I sprinted like OJ through the airport...hurdling bodies and dodging bellies and coolers...back to the stairs...onto the boardwalk...across the street...through the guard gate...back to the beach house...Oh My...

The picture does not begin to capture the crowds...if you look at right you can almost get a feel of the scene...it was high tide so only a small portion of beach was available for all the people from the big condo/hotel and all the people from Oceanside Village...and any other random people who were brave enough to want to be on that section of beach at that time...even the ocean had standing room only...people were shoulder to shoulder...No, not me...I went to a craft fair...nice and cool and full of beautiful handmade treasures...

During our early morning walk...my sisters left me to meditate in the sand while they walked further...I can only go so far...so I found this wonderful sprite of a child collecting treasures with her daddy in the early morning... she had a net and a purple bucket to fill...

She reminds me of me...seriously looking for treasures from the sea to call mine...her daddy helping her...it took me back...to a time long ago...when I first learned of the ocean and the beach and how they calm my soul...and fill my heart...and enliven my spirit...at an age like this little one I knew I must live by the sea...and I am blessed that I do...

Today's aMUSEment - what calms your soul and fills your spirit?...resolve to take a few minutes today to do these things...and make a plan to do them more often...

Family Fun Day

Lelahni is the Muse of the sea and of flower power...she is eternally bright and cheerful..she wears beautifully colored floral fabrics that she paints or batiks herself and always has a flower in her hair. Her smile warms your heart...she is simply happy by the sea...

This morning I am posting from the deck of our rented vacation home...in beautiful Garden City, SC...this is the view I have of the sun rising this morning...

There are 18 of us gathered from 4 or 5 states...others will be joining the fun throughout the week... we have a duplex that is second row back from the beach...first row is on the beach...you can see the ocean peeping through the buildings...that's it behind the palm tree...
It feels like it is going to be a warm day...in the 90s...most of the females will lie on the beach today...the males are going fishing...I am going to a craftsman fair...the book store...and hopefully, to meet Carolina girl...we shall see what adventures I will find...I promise to wear a flowered skirt...

Today's aMUSEment - Let's get out of the studio, even if it is raining. Get up and go to the nearest exit to the outside world. Take a deep breath. Lift your arms over our head as you breathe in deeply. Stretch them high to the sun. Ask to be filled with the Spirit of happiness today. Then start to walk. It does not matter where. The first flower you see, stop and look at it intently. It can be in your garden. It can be in a field. It can be on the table at the corner coffee shop. See all the colors of the flower. Look at the center and feel it. What does it feel like? Smell it. Does it have a fragrance? Linger with your flower for a while. Experience the happiness of the moment. Are you inspired to create? ...as for me i off for a walk on the beach...

Purple Passion Dahhhhling

Muse Purple Passionatta (pa-sh&n-'o-t& - Pas-sion-aaaaaa-ta) is the consummate drama queen! She does everything to excess. She speaks like Gretta Garbo and uses the word Dahhhhling to end every sentence. She is the go to muse for sultry... Dahhhhling...

I am off for a long weekend with my sisters - Pat and Meredith...and some of their children...in Myrtle Beach, SC...I was supposed to go for the week...but there were some delays with the magazine...so I have to get back home on Monday...but, at least, we will have two days together... Dahhhhling...

The thing about our family is that many of our ancestors kissed the Blarney Stone...so we are story tellers extraordinaire...and drama queens extraordinaire to go along with it...of course I am the Her Royal Highness Queen of the Drama Queens...despite what my title was yesterday...I can out drama anyone...trust me...I was born to drama...Cre8Tiva and I have learned even more from Purple Passionatta...even if my crown is a little wonky... PS - if I don't have Internet connection there I will miss you terribly...but I am sure you can entertain yourselves a bit while I'm gone...Love ya... Dahhhhling...

The Sage of Fritterton on the Marshes

Chanteuse is always singing...she was born to fill the world with joyful noise. ..music completes her and is as necessary as breathing to her...she has an endless passion for the music of the 1920's to 40's. Her main influences are Billie Holiday, Connie Boswell, Bessie Smith, Annette Hanshaw, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. You can hear these singers' inflections her singing...she sings her songs in her own way and creates a tone and mood that is uniquely her own.

Her voice is deep and sultry like a mist that hangs over a marsh on a hot summer morning...

I guess this is why her Peculiar Aristocratic Title is:

Today's aMUSEment - Get out that favorite CD or, if you have it, that old record and put it on the player. You know the one I am talking about, the one you know every word of every song. OK!!! TURN IT AS LOUD AS YOU WANT AND SING AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS for as long as you want. It will free your mind to create, I promise!

Lift Me Up Where I Belong

I got 12 comments on this blog yesterday...I am in double digits....YEAH!!!! A Milestone...

You can tell by the drawing that Muse Elevata has been "uplifted" more than once. She is bright and upbeat and always smiling. She will be forever youthful (even if it costs every penny she has). Elevata fills the room with joy and positive energy when she enters. She is always moving.

I need her energy today...I am trying to get the magazine to bed...I was hoping to have it completed yesterday...but some last minute changes kept it from happening...A magazine is always fluid until the last page is set and the files are shipped to the printer...if the final ad comes in and the last articles work...it can go for proofing this afternoon...I have to get movin'...

Today's aMUSEment - It is time to do some creative movement. Put on some uplifting music - Reggae, Gospel, the Rocky theme, march music - whatever does the trick. Get your body movin'!! That's right. Stand up and move to the beat. Swing your arms. Circle the room. Sway or shimmy. Clap you hands. Kick you feet. (Please don't hurt yourself though!) Just move for 10 minutes.

I Tagged Me

The Warholesque Musettes are fanciful and bright. They are a stretch for me, not for Cre8Tiva though. How do you stretch yourself?

I try do walk outside my comfort zone several times a month. It is not easy to make myself go places with my art that are uncomfortable, but I always learn something about myself...it is an always an amazing journey...

So I tagged myself over here yesterday...why you ask...well I really didn't have anything to write about in particular today...so let me stretch myself to share 8 random facts about me:

  • i have a long pony tail that i call my party hair...
  • i love bubbles...and bows...especially blue ones...
  • i never again want to live anyplace that does not have a palm tree in the yard...
  • i love to go barefoot...and be silly...and to laugh...
  • i love anything in miniature...
  • i can't spell...yet i am a member of mensa...go figure...
  • i was a modern ballet dancer...i last performed to "Moon River" in 1975...
  • i am a geek...i took my first computer class in 1983...fortran programing...i fell in love with computers...i am comfortable on both mac and pc platforms...

Here are the guidelines:
--Players start with Eight Random Facts/habits about themselves.
--People who are tagged write their blog and their eight random facts.
--At the end of the post, players choose eight people to be tagged and list their names
--Don't forget to leave a comment on each tagged blog telling them they have been tagged.

so i tag... (copying from constance)...everyone who visits here today... come on play with us...

Today's aMUSEment - Pick three colors you would never use. (For me they would be in the brown family because brown is not a color - right? Don't tell UPS that I have an aversion to brown please!!) Or three colors you think don't match. You can use paint, markers, colors cut from a magazine, paint chips, anything you have that is the right color will do. Find a piece of paper and begin to scribble on it, or make paint blobs, or drop cutouts on the page. Don't think about it too much because this is a 15 minute exercise. When you are pleased with the look, tear it apart. in 15 pieces. Put them in a bag or container. Now pick pieces from the container and glue them starting at the bottom right corner of another sheet of paper. Work up to the top corner then come back down beside those. Keep going until the sheet is covered. How does it look? You can use this as a background for a painting or journal on it or cut it in strips for collage. Sign and date the back always.
