You see, someone like Rebecca Parsons doesn't come along all that often. In fact, there's never been a single one like you, nor is there ever ANY possibility that another will come again. You're an Angel among us. Someone, whose eyes see what no others will EVER see, whose ears hear what no others will EVER hear, and whose perspective and feelings will NEVER, ever be duplicated. Without YOU, the Universe, and ALL THAT IS, would be sadly less than it is.

Quite simply:

You're the kind of person, Rebecca,
Who's hard to forget,
A one-in-a-million
Your friends are as varied
By taking so little
And giving so much!

Rebecca, you are so AWESOME! For your birthday, friends and angels from every corner of the Universe, including buddies you didn't know you had, will be with you to wish you the HAPPIEST of days and an exciting new year in time and space. You won't be alone!
(photo at right) #theicecreamsocial

I mentioned that the ice cream social inspired me to hold an old fashioned barbecue with ice cream dessert on the beach. I am so lucky to live on Amelia Island in Florida.

I am all about doing it up right you know. I was just going to create a little graphic for this BBQ with Beach Dessert event when I came across this cute FREE printable from Nicole at Wonderful Joy Ahead blog. It really set the tone for my outdoor BBQ picnic with Beach Dessert....so I saved myself some time designing one.

i altered the colors of the original flyer[

While I was at the Walmart Ice Cream Social, I decided to shop for the items for my BBQ. I bought these:

Edy’s Slow Churned Vanilla Ice Cream, yummy Nestlé Nesquik Chocolate Syrup and creamy Reddi-Wip. I also bought chicken, corn, watermelon along with Nestlé mini Chocolate Chips, marshmallows and other miscellaneous items. I did not intend to buy much when I went, but I sure came home with a trunk full.

We grilled the chicken and corn along with a few green onions. I like to be effecient, so we grill pork chops at the same time for a later meal!!! Aren't I clever?

the main dish is grillin' with corn and green onions

But the WOW part of this meal was the Beach Dessert...Rebecca's Divine Toll House Smores....

You can't stand still and eat them they are so delicious...We made these on the beach at night after the BBQ. How fun is that? I carried the pre-made ice cream cookies in a cooler. We toast marshmallows over the flame of a Tiki Torch because we can't build a fire on our beach. Then we eat as many as we can!!!

If you want to make some...here is what you will need:

Ingredients
A batch of Nestlé Toll House Cookies (recipe below)
(if you are not a baker you can use the ready to bake version)
Edy’s Slow Churned Vanilla Ice Cream softened
Nestlé Nesquik Chocolate Syrup
Nestlé Semi-Sweet Mini Morsels
Marshmallows
Optional Reddi-Wip

Directions
Mix chocolate morsels into the ice cream. Put in freezer until ready to assemble.

Place a cookie bottom up on plate. Squirt some Nestlé Nesquik Chocolate Syrup on the cookie. Place a scoop of ice cream on top of chocolate. Cover with another cookie.

What makes them smores is the addition of a roasted marshmallow just before eating!!! YUMMM!!!

We sometimes put the cookie in a bowl with more ice cream and squirt more Nestlé Nesquik Chocolate Syrup on top and Reddi-Wip too...just for extra sinful deliciousness.
She was a singer and a dancer. She loved music. She had a radio show for years. I used to listen as a baby with my beloved Grandmother Annie Niland. A tale from my childhood: When I was about three, I missed my Mother. I was precocious, to say the least. I thought if I could get her out of that radio box, she would come home. I sent Annie to the kitchen to get me some juice. While she was gone, I took the opportunity to knock the radio off the stand and break it. Annie came rushing back in and found me standing amidst the pieces of the radio. Looking up at her with wide-eyed expectancy I announced, "Mommy will come home now." She didn't come home.
This is my second design for Viva Las VegaStamps Design Team. When I first saw this stamp, I had about 10 caption ideas. I love working with VLVS stamps because they have the same sense of humor as I do and loads of vintage images.

The above artwork is just one of those many ideas.

Here's the backstory: The wife is getting ready for her first party after her marriage. She is in her brand new kitchen, but doesn't have a clue how to cook!!! She has burnt everything and her new husband walks in...all she could think was, "Honest, I didn't burn the beer!!!"

This is a digital collage. I love digital collage because I can use the artwork as a card, party invitation or even a work of art. I scanned the stamped image, colorized it and created the collage in PhotoShop. Here she is colorized:

For a step-by-step tutorial with photos visit my blog: Cre8Tive Compass Magazine.

Please visit Viva Las Vegastamps! and see the thousands of designs available. Parsons and this is my first design for Viva Las Vegastamps! I am honored to be on their new design team.

I love dress forms and this VLV stamp (6388) inspired me to create an artwork that honors the time worn tradition of dressmaking. I design all my cards to be frameable pieces of art for the reciepent. They just need to insert this in a 8X10" frame and hang it to enjoy forever.

The artwork is titled: "Dressmaker Dressmaker Make Me a Dream..." It is in honor of my grandmother Annie Niland who taught me how to sew on a Singer tredle sewing machine when I was just a young girl. She had an old dress form in the corner of the sewing room and the bits and pieces in this collage are all reminicient of that time I spent with her.

Here is how I created this:

I stamped the image on a piece of heavy watercolor paper (120 pound) with BRILLIANCE Cosmic Copper pigment ink by Tsuneko. I folded the paper and wet the edges so it would tear easily.

I then tore the paper along the fold line.

I did free-motion stitching with black thread and my sewing machine in an oval shape around the image. This was very random allowing the stitches to show and create texture and depth.

Then I began to collage bits and pieces to accent the image and the theme of dressmaking. I used old pattern tissue, an antique button, an old tape measure, etc. When I was pleased with the arrangement, I glued the pieces down and sewed around them again to secure the tissue. I removed the shank from the button and hot glued it in place.

I then went to work on the background. I had this Vintage Black Harlequin cardstock (no longer available) from The Paper Studio in my stash. It was perfect. I cut and frayed the edges of some cream colored burlap and glued it on the front of the cardstock at an angle.

Next I painted the dress form with Copic markers to add shape and dimension. I used YR04 and YR16. I then glued the artwork to the background. I felt it needed a little bling so I added glitter glue in gold to the base of the form and wrapped some gold pearls around the image and glued them with dots of hot glue. It is one of my Mason Jar Gift Sets. And I give you a step-by-step tutorial with photos for making Irish Soda Bread. Plus a little video to cheer you!!! Happy St. Paddy's Day!!!

You just layer the dry ingredients in a Mason Jar...print out the printable Gift Set...cut out the recipe and punch out the 2"tag...decorate your jar lid and you're all set. It is a great hostess gift for your St. Paddy's Day party throwers.

Just click the recipe card and tag printable to the left and that will start the download. Once it is downloaded to your computer, open it and print it on cardstock. Cut out the recipe and combine the dry ingredients in a Mason jar. Try to make nice layers.

HINT: Place the flour mixture on the bottom. If you place it or even part of it on top of raisins, the flour will seep down into them and cover them. See the video above and you will understand!!!

Cove the jar lid with a cute green print fabric. I used a leather showlace to tie it on. Punch out the round tag with a 2" punch. I designed the tags with a little play in case you get a little off center. Punch a hole in the top of the tag and hang it from the shoelace. You could also glue it to the front of the jar as in the picture above.

So let's make Irish Soda Bread

This is a quick and easy recipe. This is a great recipe to try for your first attempt at breadmaking...as it is almost foolproof!! The traditional recipe calls for raisins, but I often substitute semi-sweet chocolate shavings, craisins and a new fave is pomegranate craisins. So feel free to experiment.

Combine dry ingredients into a bowl.

Cut in butter until it is thoroughly mixed with dry ingredients.

Spread mixture out on floured surface.

Make a well in center of the mixture.

]

Wisk egg and buttermilk together. I am so inspired by the VLV stanps...my mind runs wild!!! There is ALWAYS movement toward the edge of what's possible here...

The Believe in Magic card is a mixed media design personified. The background was painted with acrylics. The good witch's background design was created in Photoshop. The digital background was printed and then stamped, cut out and collaged to the painted background. The words were stamped and additional details were added. The entire image was scanned and digitized, placed on a card in PhotoShop and printed.

[/caption]

The above image pushes the limits of PhotoShop, rubber stamping and photography. I shot this image from a poster in the subway in New York last fall. I have used it several times in my art. This time I found a rubber stamp called Egyptian Eye and knew it had to be used for surreal effects. I stamped the image on paper with black ink. I scanned it into PhotoShop and placed it over the eye in the image. I stretched and manipulated the image somewhat!!! Then I created the digital painting.

Below are two version of the Alice and the Cheshire cat stamp:

Another surreal fantasy image of Alice in Wonderland with the cheshire cat! This time I stamped the image on white paper, scenned it into PhotoShop and placed it over one of my digital paintings of tall trees. I painted the cat to make him stand out. It is more like Alice in fantasy land!!!

The idea or the graffiti clutch purse came when I discovered this Alice stamp!!! The background of the fabric was painted with acrylics using my graffiti techniques. A white rectangular frame was painted so the stamp would appear as a book page. Then the Alice and the Cheshire cat stamp was applied and the cat background painted. I wanted Alice's friend, the cat, to stand out. The friend words stamp was applied last. The clutch purse was sewn and embellished in my signature rustic stitches.

Stamps used:

Card:

Beautiful Witch/Fairy

Believe In Magic

Egyptian Eye:

Egyptian Eye

Alice and the Cat & the Clutch Purse:

Alice & Cheshire Cat

A Friend Is A Forever ThingRebecca E. "So the reason to change Christmas is not because it damages the earth around us, though surely it does. (Visit a landfill the week after Christmas.) The reason to change Christmas is not because it represents shameful excess in a world of poverty, though perhaps it does. The reason to change Christmas - the reason it might be useful to change Christmas - is because it might help us to get at some of the underlying discontent in our lives. Because it might help us see how to change every other day of the year, in ways that really would make our whole lives, and maybe our entire 365-days-a-year culture, healthier in the long run." Bill McKibbon - see his book below...read the rest of the article here...

All Soul's Day (sometimes called the "Day of the Dead") is always November 2 (November 3rd if the 2nd falls on a Sunday). In Western Christianity, All Souls' Day commemorates the faithful departed. This day is observed in the Roman Catholic Church, churches of the Anglican Communion, Old Catholic Churches, and to some extent among Protestants. The Eastern Orthodox Church observes several All Souls' Days during the year.

My beloved grandmother Annie Casey Niland died on All Soul's Day in 1981. Tradition has it that if you die on this day you go directly to heaven. I still miss her terribly.

The Roman Catholic celebration is based on the doctrine that the souls of the faithful which at death have not been cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for mortal sins, cannot attain the beatific vision in heaven yet, and that they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the Mass (see Purgatory).

All Souls' Day is also known as the Feast of All Souls, Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed. The day purposely follows All Saint's Day in order to shift the focus from those in heaven to those in purgatory. It is celebrated with masses and festivities in honor of the dead. While the Feast of All Saints is a day to remember the glories of Heaven and those there, the Feast of All Souls reminds us of our obligations to live holy lives and that there will be purification of the souls of those destined for Heaven.

All Saints' Day is a Christian holy day observed by many Western churches on November 1 and by Eastern churches on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The day now honors all saints of the church, even those not known by name. I thought I would share some history of the day and clear some misconceptions as to why Catholics pray to saints.

My All Saints' Icon

Christians have been honoring their saints and martyrs since at least the second century AD. The Martyrdom of Polycarp, probably written near the middle of the second century, attests to this reality. Initially the calendars of saints and martyrs varied from location to location, and many times local churches honored local saints. However, gradually feast days became more universal.

The first reference to a general feast celebrating all saints occurs in St Ephrem the Syrian (d. AD 373). St. John Chrysostom (d. AD 407) assigned a day to the feast, the first Sunday after Pentecost, where in the Eastern Churches the feast is celebrated to this day. In the West, this date was probably originally used, and then the feast was moved to May 13th. The current observance (November 1) probably originates from the time of Pope Gregory III (d. AD 741), and was likely first observed on November 1st in Germany. This fact makes the connection of the All Saints Feast with the pagan festival Samhain less likely, since Samhain was an Irish pagan feast, rather than German.

The vigil of the Feast (the eve) has grown up in the English speaking countries as a festival in itself, All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. While many consider Halloween pagan (and in many instances the celebrations are for many), as far as the Church is concerned the date is simply the eve of the feast of All Saints. Many customs of Halloween reflect the Christian belief that on the feast's vigils we mock evil, because as Christians, it has no real power over us. However, for some Halloween is used for evil purposes, in which many Christians dabble unknowingly.

David Morrison explains the proper relationship between Christians and Halloween. Various customs have developed related to Halloween. In the Middle Ages, poor people in the community begged for "soul cakes," and upon receiving these doughnuts, they would agree to pray for departed souls. This is the root of our modern day "trick-or-treat." The custom of masks and costumes developed to mock evil and perhaps confuse the evil spirits by dressing as one of their own. Some Christians visit cemeteries on Halloween, not to practice evil, but to commemorate departed relatives and friends, with picnics and the last flowers of the year. The day after All Saints day is called All Soul's Day, a day to remember and offer prayers up on behalf of all of the faithful departed. In many cultures it seems the two days share many customs. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Isn't Celebrating All Saints Day Idolatry?

Most non-Catholics assume that celebrating the saints means somehow worshipping them. The Church has always held, East and West, that worship (latria) is to be given to God alone, and that we give veneration (dulia) to the saints, the highest veneration (hyperdulia) being due to the Blessed Virgin Mary. If someone is treating a Saint as one should treat God, then yes, that is idolatry.

That being said, the Saints of God do have a role in our lives, as intercessors before God. The saints are continually praying for us and interceding on our behalf. God is the God of the living, not of the dead. As such, asking a saint for his or her intercession is perfectly legitimate and not idolatrous, no more than asking a friend or pastor to pray for you is idolatrous.

Remembering and honoring the saints are also beneficial, because to remember the heroes of the faith and follow their examples is a good thing! Many seem to have a great hatred of remembering and celebrating the lives of great Christian men and women, yet have no problem fervently celebrating the lives of secular heroes like George Washington. All Saints Day is simply a day to celebrate the lives of all the great heroes of the Christian faith, and to celebrate the deep communion we have with them as they intercede for us.
